It probably does because it isn't 3 divided by 1 and then divided by 3.

It is 3 divided by 1/3.

No way all of you guys were wrong.

I am telling you the answer is 9. It is really simple

Not if it is 9 minus 3 divided by one third plus 1.

Then the answer is one.

The problem is written intentionally stupidly in order to confuse.

If you follow the order of operations, you should do the two divisions from left to right, which would give an answer of 9. But then I saw that you had spaced it out to "hint" that the 1/3 was "together", as if it had parentheses around it, and the answer would be 1. Now I see you've changed the first / to ÷, which does a similarly tricky thing to give an answer of 1.

So, IMO, the REAL answer is: tell the dumbass who wrote the problem to learn how to write a fricking math problem.

It's properly written for anyone that knows how to properly solve a math problem.

If the intended answer is 1, it is not written correctly. But if a specific answer other than 9 is not desired, it is written properly.

Sorry, didn't read the whole thing. I assumed it was like all the other math threads where everyone thinks they're right and the actual correct answer is never agreed upon.

Google the problem. People have convinced themselves it is 1.

And it leads with this, "Even though calculators will say the answer is 9......"

Thats great. They are wrong. Go buy 50 calculators and enter the problem. Put it in excel. Use what ever math device you would like. The answer is 9

This is a description from your video

quote:

calculators will not group the 1/3, so the calculator evaluates: 9 – 3/1/3 + 1 = 9 – 3/3 + 1 = 9 – 1 + 1 = 9
Because calculators are correctly solving the equation and not changing it. Calculators do not assume, they simply solve
quote:

The correct answer is found by grouping 1/3 with parentheses and following the order of operations, with division taking precedence. 9 – 3 ÷ (1/3) + 1
Right off the bat they change the equation by adding parenthesis

3/.3333333 =9

9-9=0

0+1=1

Your answer is 1

Your welcome!

There are multiple ways to solve this problem depending on order of operations and whether that is a 1/3 or it is 1 divided by three. Based purely as written:
3 divided by 1 = 3. 3/3=1. 9-1=8. 8+1=9. The answer is 9.

If it's a fraction 1/3, then 3/ 1/3 would = 9. 9-9+1=1

If the / is actually seperating the top from the bottom so as to be more accurately written as (9-3/1)/(3+1), then 3/1=3, 9-3=6, 3+1= 4, and 6/4= 1.5.
