The combat in Yakuza has never been great. It's basically Die Hard the Arcade game in open world red light district Tokyo.
That said, I felt that combat was on par with Zero, but the bosses were a lot more annoying. I hated the dumb mechanic where you had to switch combat styles and perform a heat action to stop bosses from regaining health. The all seemed like they block for days and have the superhuman ability to dodge everything you do.
A lot of that is just due to staying true to how the bosses were originally designed. I agree with a lot of the reviews who say it's interesting to see how far the series has come since the first game. I wouldn't necessarily say this makes Kiwami a bad game, but it is what it is.
