Thanks for sharing. I think I'll try this. What kind of variety have you tried with your bacon? Also, your last bit says served with stewed okra - does that mean you added additional okra at the end?

Purple hull peas had okra in them.

I am a non-discriminatory bacon lover and use whatever we have. Either thick cut or thin is ok but thick cut has a nice chew in this dish.
Regarding the stewed okra, if you look at the final picture, you will see a helping of purplehull peas with some okra stewed in them as they cook hiding on the plate behind the Okra and Bacon dish.
I am old school country when it comes to purplehull peas with okra stewed in the peas as they cook and served together.
I understand there are a number of people who do not like okra and probably even more who do not like it stewed, as it can be slimy. Makes no difference at all to me because I love okra any way you might choose to cook it.

Looks good. Okra is one of my favorites.
I do okra and tomatoes as more of a stew, with more tomato than you have there, usually a large can of Cento, and some chicken broth that largely cooks out but provides good flavor. Sometimes I add some corn if it is in season.

We do stewed okra and tomatoes too, usually with some onion. Using more tomatoes cuts back on the okra taste and emphasizes the tomato over the okra. For us, that is a different dish.
With this dish, I enjoy the separation of flavors (Okra, tomato, onion or bacon) depending on which component is on the fork, or the amount of each component makes its way to the fork. It is hard to achieve that separation and variation of flavor with a stewed dish.

I understand (very well) eating at grandmother's house memories. I have them too.
I guess your memories are not located in Isola, MS, where mine are. Regardless of the location where they might have taken place, they are things I would not trade for anything. I am sorry for those who missed out on happy family traditions that involved food and fellowship around the table. Some things are too valuable to let go.
