The entire Theory that the parties switched is complete and utter bullshite and the only support for it is if one focus is entirely on race. And even that is suspect as was pointed out by other posters.

The parties didn't switch per se, the south switched parties. Once the south left the Democratic Party, its more liberal factions didn't have to worry about cowtowing to southern bourbon demands. The GOP became more conservative as its main base of support became the old confederacy.
