That truly sucks. Really.
As to the rest of your post, I actually had no opinion on the matter until all this shite came up. Personally it doesn't affect me in the least and part of me is just kind meh on the whole thing. The only reason Ive been posting is to state that I can understand the sentiment from say, the descendant of a murdered slave. Its a public space.
