I've got proof that our family did not own slaves. Poor rice farmers in Mermentau from one side..and Cherokee Indian from the other side. Slaves typically took the last names of their former owners...there are no heritage AA families that have the same last name as I do. Only recently have they started having it due to marriage and adoption.
