Thank you. This isn't some great mystery.
To your question, becuae monuments are nothing more than politics masquerading as art, always has been. Their message remains intact, just because you don't think it matters (which is absurd, Americans LOVE symbolism and put a high value on it) it does.
Why can't a community where that statue is (say cville) collectively decide to reject those politics and move or take down the statue???

Good question but I'd rather him back up his claim with facts. He needs to learn just because he believes something it doesnt make it true.
