The one good thing to come out of this is that everyone now is seeing just how incompetent and awful the NOLA city government is.
If you check police, fire, and EMS - all of them have similar issues with equipment.
The system is finally getting exposed.
Here's what really sucks - mayoral qualifying used to not be until later in the year, since the election was in February. Under the old calendar, people would still be qualifying for mayor. So we are going to be stuck with this current crap group of candidates, none of whom inspire any confidence to fix these issues.
If NOLA had a write-in option... I have a feeling Torres would be getting a whole lot of heat.

They only have 5 to begin with? That seems low to me.

The guys that work the vacuum trucks break the equipment purposely so they don't have to work as hard.

Where is the money going (other than Mitch's cronies)?

This is why government should stick to few things. The private companies can do a better job at lower costs to the state.

Provided they are well-vetted and properly supervised and given proper incentives.
There is a long, long list of private companies that flat out fleece government.

The government is allowing itself to be fleeced in those cases. We need a local government filled with knowledgeable business people that can negotiate on behalf of the tax payers in an up to date and transparent way.

Simple fact is that every city shortcoming the citizens are disgruntled about are huge tasks to tackle and we are asking the city to be 100% focused on crime, infrastructure, schools, jobs, etc.
Any one of those topics is big. All of them combined is nearly impossible to focus on all at once.
We need more people/companies pitching in to do the work instead of relying on the local government

Right now in many cases privitizing simply means giving the contract to whomever is politically connected and gave enough campaign contributions to the right people.
If you want to offload more services to the private sector (something I agree with, by the way) we need a much better system for evaluating, awarding, and monitoring these contracts.
And that will only happen if we elect people who want to make the city better, not just enrich their contributors.

Good luck with that.

Holy crap... the S&WB has 85.3 million in a rainy day fund?
Look... I'm all about saving for a rainy day. But we allowed the system to come damn near collapse because we weren't performing maintenance and staffing properly... yet we have 85.3 million in the bank for a rainy day?
We could have been making these repairs as needed, over time, instead of putting the money in the fund... and the cost of those repairs would be a lot, lot less than the amount they will now cause because it's an emergency, essentially no-bid work.
