Perhaps the government subsidies for small airports makes the flight profitable?

That can't be more than a 12 minute flight

ETA: 18 minutes total

The flight goes to/from Hattiesburg & Dallas, but it has a stop in Meridian for the passengers that only need the Meridian/Dallas leg.

Meridian and Hattiesburg are part of Essential air Service by the DOT. So instead of flying two routes from DFW, AA just combines the route with a stop.

I had no idea either had an airport. I meet people all of the time flying into Gulfport that are making the drive home up to Hattiesburg.
