I disagree with pretty much all of that, but music is subjective and as much as I love them, I can see the DPlan not being someones cup of tea.

For sure

My issue with most of the music beloved on here that I "don't get" is that it's just generally unpleasant for me to listen to. It's almost like the goal is to make music that isn't radio friendly, lacks melodic qualities and won't ever be called "catchy."

If it's disjointed, inconsistent, discordant, weird for the sake of being weird, etc. - I just don't like it. And I think that's a fairly objective take, but I'm interested in how you'd think about stuff like that. Do you listen to those Dismemberment Plan songs and go "man, this sounds great" and it gets stuck in your head all day? Or do you listen to it and go "this is different, it's not like most stuff I hear, it's unique, I like it"?

I'm not attempting to be critical, my point is that it's hard to tell whether people like different things in music, or if they hear things entirely differently, if that makes sense.

I'll answer from my POV, though I realize the question wasn't directed at me..

That is usually my barometer, though not always (sometimes it may be the beat)... I also like noise.. distorted guitar.. and a melody that isn't always immediate...

This is the song that is on repeat in my mind this morning.. Superchunk - Swallow That

I do find them catchy and their songs have gotten stuck in my head many of times. I'm not a musician, nor an amazing writer, so it's usually hard for me to explain why I like certain music, but I just remember listening to the DPlan for the first time and being blown away. Although you can hear their influences in them, they still sounded totally unique to me. Just a perfect oddball pop sound. Plus their drummer is totally badass.

But I can see someone finding them off-putting. They have weird time signatures. They can be abrasive. The singers voice isn't what you would describe as classically great.
