not that this is actually a (direct) First Amendment issue, but the very concept of free speech protection is grounded in things that offend common sensibilities.
laws follow culture, and if our culture no longer values the right of offensive people to express themselves in patently offensive manners, then the law will follow suit.

The First Amendment expressly uses the wording of freedom of religion as it pertained to the religiously persecuted that came to America, 200+ years before the Constitution was drafted...
