At the very least, they have to have a working knowledge of the drugs being dispensed so that they can work as a check and balance of what's being distributed and if it could interact with other meds distributed to the same patient by other doctors.
You also still have compound medications that are prepared specifically for a patient.

That is the doctors job though b/c pharmacists don't screen you when you get the drugs as to side effects nor can they change the drugs themselves, only the volumes.
