Thibodaux native and Baton Rouge resident J.J. Tabor know it was a good one when he hooked it.

But he had no idea that the fish on the other end of his line was a new state record and the highlight of the 2017 International Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo.

Tabor's fish was a grouper. It was the talk of the tournament on Saturday, totaling 383-pounds, 2-ounces - a new state record for the species.

Tabor, a regular on the local rodeo scene, said he's proud to be in the record books.

As his fish was weighed, a massive crowd gathered around the scales. When it was announced that it was a state record, the crowd roared in applause.

"What a day," Tabor said. "I didn't expect this. I knew it was big, but you don't think about records or setting any records when you go out on the water. To being this fish in, it was just a great accomplishment."

The fish came onshore at about 4:30 p.m. - about 90 minutes before the scales close at the prestigious event.

It was by-far the biggest fish caught on Saturday - a day which proved tough on anglers because of stiff winds from a cold front, which is sweeping through the area.
