It's not just southern culture. I live in southern california and even here it is unhealthy. Lots of the "mexican" food here is tex-mex and filled with unhealthy sauces and certain cheeses.

Right, almost any "Americanized" version of international foods are worse for you than the original.

Our tastebuds have evolved to require this in America. Healthier, less tastier foods are less rewarded in the marketplace and so they cost more or fail.
