Rouses IMO is just getting too big.
And they'll be gone if they don't slow down/adjust because the customers that made them will leave for better options. They won't have enough business to survive because only the cheapest of the cheap-type shoppers will put up with the stuff that has been mentioned and Rouses isn't cheap enough to keep their business.

They seem to have some focus stores where they have good management. I'm curious as to why they'd make personnel changes at the acquired LeBlanc's stores and let the quality suffer.

It is simply amazing to watch the decline in quality of the store on Drusilla since Leblanc's gave way to Rouses'.
same with the Prairieville location. Buy meat today, it's bad in a day or 2.

Thankfully the Winn Dixie is not that far.
Isn't Winn Dixie closing most of their stores? Thought I read that somewhere on here.

That's another mid sized chain where the quality varies greatly by location.

Then, magic! LeBlanc's comes in and turns the place into heaven on Jefferson
The independent grocery stores (Hi Nabor, Reeves, Calandro's, LeBlanc's Matherne's, Dorignac's, Rouses, etc.) in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area actually have a disproportionately high market share relative to other similarly sized cities.
I think that's because of a combination of factors:
1. The more unique diets of south Louisiana gives locally owned stores a built in advantage with a preference for locally sourced seafood, coffee, etc.
2. The road network makes it a real bitch to service stores in southern Louisiana from a DC in Houston or Atlanta - which as sort of shielded a lot of independent stores from more robust national competition.
3. Baton Rouge-based Associated Grocers has an advantage in location, and they seem to serve most of the indie stores in south Louisiana. Rouses was a member store before they started their aggressive expansion. I thought they switched to Supervalu like Albertson's but I could be wrong. They are not AG anymore.
It's interesting to see how the big regional or national chains handle the area. Other than Wal Mart, the only major chains that have expanded in the area are specialty stores or higher ends like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods.

We went to the pet store next to Rouse's P'ville yesterday and the Rouse's parking lot was almost completely empty. When Rouse's first took over, you couldn't get into that parking lot. Now, there's a dozen or so cars there on Sunday afternoon.

Get a Publix
Would be a nice addition, but I believe their nearest DC is Atlanta. Grocery distributors typically prefer to be within 6-7 hours (by truck) of their stores.
They would have to come in with multiple stores at once to justify a DC. That's unlikely to occur unless Rouses (or other similarly sized regional chains) sell out to Publix. Weirder things have certainly happened.
I think the biggest threat to the current grocery store model is home delivery from Wal Mart and Whole Foods. It would be hard for the local independents to replicate that. They'd have to move into a more specialty market segment.

It's kind of the same way in Zachary after they took over that LeBlanc's. It's almost impossible to find decent produce. It's all rotten or old looking.

Totally disagree. Rouses has waaaaaay more choices than Leblanc's did. I got prime steaks there the other day. PRIME.

Like what?
Is prime meat the make or break item?

Oh cute, so you're his friend and you think he's a great guy.
Have you worked for him? I did for two years in high school, as did many of my friends in high school. The way he treats his employees is indefensible by any metric. I don't treat my adult employees the way he treats high school aged kids.
As an adult, I have a few friends who have had professional dealings with him, and even done him personal favors, and they share my opinion that he's just a top notch, unappreciative, pompous a-hole.

I'd be willing to bet-considering you think shopping there and down the street is too expensive you just don't like that you can't afford it.
Expensive does not mean I can't afford it. It means I won't pay a premium at an establishment that I know is owned by an a-hole. Simple as that.

I have a friend who managed a Leblanc's. He learned of the buyout on the radio. He tried to tough out the transition but it only went from bad to worse. He quit.

disagree all you want. Doesn't change facts.

FYI- I had no problem finding prime steaks at LeBlanc's on Drusilla before it was Rouses. I agree that the quality of that store has suffered under new ownership.
