My neurosurgeon straight up told me, "We don't do back or neck surgery for back or neck pain - we do back surgery for leg pain and neck surgery for arm pain (or numbness). If your back or neck pain goes away too, consider it a bonus." Also said he personally won't recommend a lumbar fusion unless your are losing control of your bowels or can't walk.
