Actually, it was either Mike Matheny or Tito Francona.

But BDW went cheap arse, and went with cheap option. When Cardinals were floundering to end the 2011 season, Ownership told Joe Strauss(RIP) that they did not feel paying a manager 5+mil was a smart move(being cheap).

And because of it, they hired MM, and Francona went on to Cleveland.

I like Francona, but his resume isn't squeaky clean either. He just blew a 3-1 lead in the World Series. And he lost control of his 2011 Red Sox, and completely choked away a playoff spot.
