See this is where I don't necessarily agree. There's a difference between lying to cover up something you don't want discovered and exaggerating or downplaying to get to the point or even talking off the cuff.

The Trumps are not politicians. Politicians typically weigh and measure every word they use and have their speech writers quadruple check everything to make sure they aren't in the wrong or put themselves with their backs against a wall. Even then they still do it from time to time.

The Trumps ad lib like most Americans do and say stuff that may not be technically true but isn't an outright lie because they aren't intending to deceive. At least that's my take. It's like someone said at the end of the campaign last year: the left takes Trump literally but not seriously while the right takes him seriously but not literally. It's why his words are nitpicked to the extreme by the left while the right doesn't care because they get what he means.
