His parents drove him to their family doctor, who set it and put it in a plaster cast. Took him a few weeks to recover, but when he got the cast off he was back on the playground just as before.
I don't know exactly what his family had to pay, but I'm pretty sure they didn't have to go into debt. I imagine they paid cash up front, probably less than $50 (bear in mind, routine childbirth, including five days in the hospital, cost around $200 at the time).

Yeah.. break something now, and it's pretty much surgery. Or at least that's what the ortho told me. Unless it's very very basic. Cast only gets you immobile until they can operate. He said standard of care is different now that it used to be.
