I remember when Greg Louganis hit his head during the 1988 Olympics and bled all into the pool and allowed a doctor to stich him up without wearing gloves.
Because Greg Louganis didn't bother to disclose to anyone that he had AIDS.
But Louganis was hailed as a hero years later when he finally disclosed it...while putting that doctor at risk.
When PC trumps sound medical practices, then society is fricked.

quote:It defeats the purpose because it she was concerned about germs, then the gloves aren't going to stop transmission when you put food into your mouth.
What do you mean by defeats the purpose?
On the other hand, she may have a legitimate phobia or OCD, and since those grounded in irrational fears or compulsions, then it irrational and counterproductive behavior shouldn't be too surprising.

That article left out:
All of the adults she was with were given gloves, because they were handling the children's food.

True. It went over my head, thought he was talking about being there in general

quote:Well yeah. Even though the risk of transmission was still probably low, it had far more risk then just basic normal interactions like in the OP.
But Louganis was hailed as a hero years later when he finally disclosed it...while putting that doctor at risk.
Of course, she may have an issue with germs in general though.

She should not have gone if she had to wear gloves. Worked in a hospital for years. We gloved up with certain procedures but there were thousands of times not and you never knew if you were dealing an HIV+ person or not.

How dare she take simple precautions around people with a deadly disease.

What if she didn't have to, just chose to?

Blood work or treating the injured is a little different than sitting next to kids that you are aware have HIV

quote:Well the gloves aren't really going to really decrease the risk much, if at all.

quote:Well if it was just for a photo op then sure. But if she truly cares and the kids had a positive experience, then it's still a net positive (pun not intended).
She should not have gone if she had to wear gloves.

It's like wearing a helmet when riding a bike. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be doing it in the first place just because you are taking extra steps to protect yourself
Yeah, that's not even a legit comparison.

ETA: if you meant specifically eating my bad.
That's exactly what I mean.
If you're wearing gloves, you should not be eating or drinking in that environment.

That's actually not true. The fact that she's eating doesn't decrease risk.

quote:Don't know what kind of work you do but if you are that scared, never shake another hand. What is the difference in being aware and being unaware of someone with HIV?

even people at the soup kitchen wear gloves when giving out food
Posted on 7/12/17 at 8:47 pm to upgrayedd
quote:Well transmission without the gloves would be extremely unlikely unless she has an open wound and that somehow came in contact with blood and even then it would still be less than likely.
That's actually not true.
So the gloves wouldn't have much, if any, impact on the risk for HIV transmission, BUT it makes a lot more sense to prevent the transmission the slew of other germs. Not a big deal either way though.
quote:Yeah it's counterproductive, but again that's primarily related to all the other germs.
The fact that she's eating doesn't decrease risk.

Wasn't talking about me, was talking about her. I don't care that she chose to wear gloves

You mention working at a hospital and not wearing gloves sometimes not knowing if a person has HIV or not. Obviously knowing could make someone more cautious as there is a potential (not likely) of an action resulting in your death that wouldn't exist otherwise

Because people are petty, negative and hateful and spend their time looking to criticize or bring others down.

You are right in regards to your point, my comparison was made thinking you were talking about being there in general.
