Several monkeys escape during the filming of the old Tarzan movies in the 1930's and 1940's that were filmed in the Ocala area. They remained somewhat protected due to the Silver Springs tourist attraction. Now, from what I understand the population has grown to a point of being a problem.

Yeah....it's not necessarily promoted, but they have been living in the woods around Silver Springs for about 70 years. Some guy bought a few back in the 1930's and kept them on an island on a river in Central Florida as part of the exhibit. Well, they learned how to swim and made it to the mainland . They have been migrating south over the years.

They are escapees from Silver Springs. Silver Springs discharges into the Ocklawaha River. The Ocklawaha flows north from central Florida, through the Ocala National Forest until it joins the St. Johns River near Palatka.

I have fished this area all my life (69 yrs.) and always see the monkeys when fishing in the side creeks.

They have been in the forest since I was a young teen. We would leave them boiled peanuts and half drank beers, on a cypress stump when we saw them. This area is as wild as it was a hundred years ago.

If you have ever seen the old black & white Tarzan movies where Tarzan wrestles and kills the Crocs.(Of course fake in the movie) You have seen the Ocklawaha. It's 125 miles of twisting Crystal clear river during the dry season.
