Wife now wants to spend some time in Salem so any suggestions there too would greatly appreciated.

Frankly there's not much to do in Salem other than the Witch Tours.

I'd suggest renting a car and driving up the coast if Salem is a "must."
As mentioned before, Salem is kinda dull outside of Halloween time. But if you rent a car and shoot straight north from Salem to spots like Newburyport, Portsmouth, and Kittery (Maine), it's a nice drive and the towns are really cool. You could easily kill a day driving up there.
