Study: significant increase in patients who can't afford to pay full hospital bill

A new TransUnion Healthcare analysis revealed a significant rise in the percentage of patients that didn’t pay their hospital bills in full. Approximately 68% of patients with bills of $500 or less did not pay off the full balance during 2016 – up from 53% in 2015 and 49% in 2014.
“There are many reasons why more patients are struggling to make their healthcare payments in full, the most prominent of which are higher deductibles and the increase in patient responsibility from 10% to 30% over the last few years,” said Wiik, author of the book and also principal for healthcare revenue cycle management at TransUnion. “This shift in healthcare payments has been taking place for well over a decade, but we are seeing more pronounced changes in how hospital bills are paid during just the last few years.”
This is why it's fricking dumb to only focus on premium costs when debating the ACA

I was wondering for a while if people were shirking their bills with Obamacare because of the deductible.
Boom.
Boom.

Ever looked at the itemized bill from a hospital?
Costs are grossly inflated.
ETA* Not saying that is the only reason, but it is definitely a piece to the healthcare puzzle.

$30 for a gauze pad? Seems reasonable.

You don't pay for just the material when you go to a restaurant and you don't pay for just the gauze pad at a hospital.

Then why itemize it? The restaurant is not itemizing every ingredient in every menu item on my bill.
Seems like a bullshite attempt at an analogy.

Because the original concept is bullshite.
It's itemized because insurance companies demand it. You tell them what it cost you and they say "meh, we'll give you this for it"
Saying flurp durp ibuprofen $10/pill?!!? is indicative of ignorance of the system and a basic concept of needing to pay for overhead.

And the math has got to be common core, cuz I cant figure it out to save my life. Its like a cell phone bill and the egnima machine had a baby.

480 for a plastic cast was my latest bitch fest. Guarantee it cost their chineese manufacturer 4 bucks to make and ship it over here. My kids nerf gun has more plastic and it was 30 bucks.

Then put an "overhead" line item

I don't get how calling out such convolutedness can be seen as "fluff durp" ignorance. I didn't say I didn't recognize the stupid game. That doesn't make the game any less stupid, though. And still doesn't make your attempted analogy any good.

Those items are inflated to account for the losses from the non- or under-paying patients.
Add: And overhead of regulations. My doctor friend hated Medicare and he was active when it was first introduced in the 60s.

"The game", as you so eloquently put it, is in effect no different from the hoodrats swapping liquid laundry detergent off their EBT for cash or drugs. It's not very different from hoodrats eating lobster and caviar driving down the road in dey escalade after gettin dey hair and nails did.
Both entities, hoodrats and hospital executives, are gaming others (govt. and ins. co.'s) for profit maximization. Tell ya what though, it's once again the ones wearing the suits doing the greater financial harm.

No, it's the patients who won't pay their damned bills.

No it's pretty much the only reason. The healthcare industrial complex is nothing but a bunch of criminals. They're going to bring the whole country down with the price gouging horse shite. frick em.
Welcome to my side.
I have been saying this for 9 years.
When you allow the healthcare of this nation to be a profit making industry.
They try to make as much profit as possible.
Meanwhile the common man goes broke trying to pay his medical bills.
