Kelly or Marino. Flip a coin
Posted on 6/26/17 at 1:44 pm to dnm3305
For me, Marino: sacked less, more pass Y/G, higher career passer rating, and better career pass INT pct

Marino is the greatest passer I have ever seen
Tarkenton is the most overrated QB ever, a stat compiler who played forever and never got injured, a glorified Testaverde

But he won a league MVP, retired with all major passing records(broke all of Unitas' marks), led the Vikings to 3 SBs and is an HOFer. Accomplished more than Dan Fouts and Warren Moon can claim and they're HOFers as well.

Yet stark played on a team that had some of the best defensive players in league history on it during those SB runs...... plus he had one of the most versatile backs in history in Chuck Foreman.... Fouts and Moonnever had as good s defense as Tark had... that is FACT......

But we're talking about QB accomplishments and the facts hold that Tarkenton exceeded every NFL QB that ever played in the record books when he retired and led the Vikings to 3 SB appearances as well, all that other stuff is irrelevant and wasn't advanced in the argument.
Posted on 6/26/17 at 2:30 pm to ThePTExperience1969
Again you act like he did it alone.... it matters a great deal that he had such a great defense around him every year they made the SB... go look at any of Fouts or Moons teams and tell me they had near the defense that the Vikings had the years they went to the SB... you seem like the stat guy. I am giving you the chance to prove me wrong....

I'll put it another way... if Marino had the running game and the defenses that Tark had he would have made many more SBS.

Donovan McNabb probably not better than Marino, but makes the short list.

Unitas won a Super Bowl

Well that's hypothetical, I never argued that what Marino accomplished wasn't remarkable but that Tarkenton led his team to 3 Super Bowl appearances while breaking Johnny Unitas/Sonny Jurgenson's records was more remarkable considering so few teams threw the ball much and fewer were proficient at avoiding interceptions as well. The NFL average for team passing INTs was roughly 20-21 throughout the 70s, Tarkenton threw 15 INTs or less 7x that decade. The argument's about the greatest QB never to win a Super Bowl not the greatest team is it not? Also, Tarkenton still ranks 7th all-time in total offense after being out of the NFL for about 40 years.

So Marino is not as good as TARK just because TARK went to more SBS..... ok stat boy again look at both careers and tell me how he was s better overall QB.... and don't give me the crap about them not throwing the ball as much back then... Hrll Joe Namath threw for 4,007 yards in 1967......

Also Tarkenton held those records for roughly 20 years, Marino's records were broken rather swiftly. QB's are incredibly crucial to team success bc they possess such massive control over team performance so 3 SB appearances is reflective on Tarkenton's proficiency at the position whereas Marino only led the Dolphins to one appearance and none thereafter. Team success is an essential element in determining how great a player is bc the objective of the game is winning is it not? The quarterback is the leader of the damn team IIRC.

You keep saying 3 SB appearance as if that's not a team stat. You knock dukke for bringing up defense but keeping referencing 3 SB appearances.
Never seen any of these guys play, but damnit I have a strong opinion as to who was better. Love it.

Both QBs retired from football with all major passing records. One played during an era where it was significantly more difficult to throw successfully, one during an easier era. One QB led his team to 3 SB appearances, one only 1 appearance. One QB blew the curve significantly relative to league average, one simply outgained a plethora of 3,000-4,000 yd passers. Fran>Marino any more questions?

quote:Sure, for someone who blew away the curve, how many times did Fran lead the league in passing yards? He must have been dominating everyone if he was putting up those stats back then.
any more questions?
