Mizzoubuckeye is off by a couple of years on his Michael Jackson decline. He was still HUGE and widely admired during the time of his "Bad" album. He had started to change his look through surgery, but it wasn't crazy looking yet. Now near the turn of the decade the more different his appearance became people started wondering "wtf is with that dude?" But he was extremely popular, even in the USA throughout most of the 80s.
