Engine issues on my CJ7 258 i6. Any Carb experts? NEW UPDATE Page 3

I have done some research on this but cant find any clarification with my certain problems.
The engine idles fine, revs up fine( not in gear) and will stay running at a higher RPM. But when i put it in gear and accelerate the engine dies after a few seconds. i can pop the clutch to get the engine running again if im still rolling or if i am stopped it will crack right back up. It only dies when it is put under load.
I have read i could be building up a vacuum in the fuel system and thats preventing fuel getting to the carb under load, so i checked the gas cap and sure enough i heard either air rushing in or out. So i left the cap off. But the same thing happened. I know this vintage had vented gas caps and this is a after market cap, but removing it would keep the pressure equal.
Any Ideas on what to trouble shoot? maybe a collapsed fuel line?

Or you could losing vacuum with a leak in the system.

Have a buddy with an XJ with a 6 that did the exact same thing. Think it ended up being the fuel pump.

Could be as simple as a fuel filter.
You'd need to check fuel supply pressure to at least narrow down to either a vehicle problem or a carb problem.

quote:ok i did takt eh fuel supply line off the car while the pump was running and it gushed fuel out. there is a pressure valve right between that line and the carb. (I know that cause it was frozen and i couldnt start it once. it was just the little needle point was stuck.)

Im stumped because it runs fine when i rev it up not underload but put it in gear and take off, it dies.

Well I'm assuming it just can't get enough fuel to run under load because that's usually what the issue is. If you've got good fuel supply to the carb then the issue would be the carb. Im no expert on carbs so someone else will need to chime in. I believe they have little vacuum boosters and shite in there and it could be a vacuum issue restricting fuel delivery.

ok guess i better start reading on how to mess with the carb.

Every time I talk to someone about CJ's the subject of carb issues always comes up. I would tend to lean towards a problem with the carb also. My first idea was the filter but you seem to have checked that out already.

yea. this looks like it might be what i try next.

that is where the issue started, it would die when i was in motion and took my foot off the gas to slow down. maybe this mine is just more of a problem now.

One of the most common problems with this carburetor is an erratic idle; in extreme cases (as it was with my jeep) the vehicle will stall every time you slow down or stop.

Yea it could be that. Carbs are like voodoo black magic. They do goofy shite for the tiniest little bitty thing. I hate them.
If rebuild kits are super cheap, maybe just rebuild it and see what that gets you?

IIRC there is an inherent design flaw in that carb. Been years but mine did the same thing. Clogged jets maybe.
Anyway best solution is aftermarket makes some direct swap in carbs that will fix the issue permanent style

I looked at a couple of parts sites. Weber makes one, but they are pretty proud of it, to the tune of $600+. Crown makes one, but I have never had any experience with Crown carbs. Back when I was driving carburetor'ed cars, it was Holley and Weber.

Just dig around and make sure there's no other easy issues to deal with like a broken vacuum line before you order a carb. That sounds like the problem, but you hate to spend $300, and wait 2 weeks for something that doesn't get you anywhere.

looks like this is the way to go.
It's a rebuilt carb by an individual and part of a kit to convert the Jeep to the Motorcraft 2150. Those were real good reliable carbs but you are depending on that one individual if you have problems.
I would be sure it's the carb before changing it.

Weber 32/36 is what you want if you're going to replace. Depending on what carb you currently have, you have to choose the right mounting kit. You literally unbolt the old carb, bolt the new one on, and tune the idle screws. You can buy rebuild kits for the Carter carb you have as well.

carb jet has some trash in it.It doesn't take much to clog them, just a small speck of rust can do it.
pretty easy to fix.
