i did look at those, i'm leaning bumper for a few reasons:

1) my truck doesn't have a bed mount at the moment
2) i'd like to keep the bed free/open for storage while we are on the road
3) i'd like the option of a bed mounted rack that would be like a combo travel storage and camp kitchen/etc type thing

if we are going to overpack (a certainty if you know my wife) i'd rather load the truck bed than the trailer

Fair enough, it's got to work for you and like I said AS is a great product. My father has this one and he loves it.

The issue with that is your crap is then not secure unless you are talking about getting a bed cover or something.

I would not buy used as your first one, nothing wrong with buying new if you have experience, use it, and know what you want. But all of that stuff is going to drop in value tremendously, I'd buy what you think you want used and then reevaluate down the road.

IMO you really need to figure out if its just going to be you and your wife. IF that is the case, your options are endless and you don't need much space. That's the best situation to save tons of money. Its when people start wanting room for family (kids) and toys that get pricey.
