re: Uber tipping is a thing now?

Eh, I don't think it's such a bad thing.
My friend drives for Uber/Lyft, and he goes all out. He has tablets mounted to the back seats connected to WiFi with bookmarks set for tourist/travel information about the city.
He goes out of his way to help people load their bags. One time he was in my neighborhood and asked me if he could stop by and change his clothes because he helped a wheelchaired veteran into his car during a rainstorm and was completely soaked.
Circumstances like that dictate a tip in my opinion.

Nothing like getting your rider rating wrecked because you don't give enough tips.
They rate you as soon as they drop you off, so they don't know if you gave them a tip unless they directly hand it to you. If anything, this will only help your rating if someone gives 4 stars or less to nontipping riders.

I only tipped on Uber once and that was when I was in Portland and the driver had to sit in traffic for about an hour to get me to the auto dealership where my car was in the shop at. Gave him $10.

I thought this was one of the biggest original draws for using uber. You don't have to worry about tipping.
But when your competitor does and actually has a higher vetting project on who they allow to drive for them (i.e. often better service for the customer), then got to get on with it.

The only time I've ever use Uber was traveling to and from the airport. I tipped because they helped me with my luggage.

Sucks if that is the default display and you have to "enter a custom amount" to leave no tip. For Lyft, the default position is "No tip", so you can just hit submit if you don't want to leave a tip.

I'm not surprised. You portray an over inflated sense of self worth on the internet. I'm sure you're even worse on a face to face basis.

I almost never tip, and have a 5.0 rider rating on both Uber and Lyft.

I like the idea. most drivers are not making as much as they claim after uber takes out their share

I've only used an Uber like 5 times total in my life. Other 4 times were in Seattle going to and from the airport. Those drivers didn't even speak English.

So the Uber drivers job is to take you from point a to be for the price he agreed on. Then he expects you to give him more Money or he will give YOU a bad rating. Sounds about right.
I love it when people walk into my office and toss me a few dollars when at my desk doing my job.

Uber marketed their product as not requiring tipping.
The drivers signed up knowing this.
It's all the idiots tipping that creates these awkward situations.
Like a poster noted, not tipping is one thing Europe got right.

Can I add to my rider profile that gratuity is dependent on not talking to me?
I had an Uber driver a couple of weeks ago in Tuscaloosa, which I'm not familiar with at all, that got me talking football and by the time we got done with the 3 mile trip it was $20, dude knew what he was doing. Got a credit for the extra mileage and time but Uber sucks

Exactly. It's a fricking fixed price service. Nothing more. Nothing less.

no one is forcing you to tip
i will not tip if the uber driver annoys me (this is like 50/50 chance in my experiences)

They rate you before you tip them! If anything this will only improve your rider rating, because they won't know if you tipped them or not. Some of you aren't seeing the forest for the trees.
