I don't think the market is ready for something like that right now. However, once fuel prices climb they could grow some legs. Perhaps they missed the boat a few years ago when everyone was screaming about fuel prices. I don't think the Ram is doing too much in terms of sales with their respective 1/2 ton diesel.

Any company that sells trucks in Europe or really anywhere else in the world, likely has a small diesel already. Just not in the USA. So its not like this is a huge thing for Ford to do. The key in say Europe is that diesel is cheaper over there so it makes more sense, they don't tax it as much because it burns cleaner or whatever.

Unless they can put out something like 30+ mph, I just don't see the usefulness of it? I'd guess its only sold in higher end packages with the other makes because its more of a luxury right now unless gas prices change.

The market would embrace a lower cost diesel aimed at the commuter who occasionally needs to tow something. Playing the diesel dick measuring game with half tons isn't working. The people who are interested in dick measuring are mostly going to buy the bigger more powerful trucks (as well as the people who tow heavy) and are not too concerned with fuel economy, at least not right now.

Hopefully Ford's diesel will have an economical offering in a base trim, with exception fuel economy and modest performance numbers. That's where the gap is in the market right now. I can't go buy a base model truck with a small Diesel engine.

As said that's because they are all in $50k plus trucks I think right? If you are going to pay $55k for a 1/2 ton why not drop 60 on a 3/4 ton which is what most guys are doing.

I agree it would be interesting if Ford could put a small diesel in a $35k truck. I don't see why they can't? A quick look shows a chevy Cruz is $17k at its cheapest and $23k with a diesel now, that's only $6k more.

I feel like a $32k Ford XL 4 door would be sweet.
