This is the world we live in. Individual threatens officer(s) with a knife, and the people who defended themselves are the ones being vilified.

This is irrelevant. You don't know what someone is capable of and I'd rather the innocent parties be 100% certain in defense of their lives than having to take a chance on someone breaking the law by being the aggressor with a weapon.
