It has led to a near unbelievable level of shallow behavior and simplistic outlook. People want to be famous. They want to be known, noticed. But they don't want to do anything to achieve this.
In the past, I don't think great men did things to be famous. Albert Schweitzer didn't do what he did to be known. Einstein wasn't trying to be famous...it was a by-product of their deeds. Egos existed then but not like now.

It's definitely enabled people who previously were kept in check by societies norms.
And of course, it's changed our norms.
