Both armies were all volunteer in the first year of the war. Southern armies during the first year of the war were about equal in numbers to the Yankee armies. Yet the North had a population of almost 21 million compared to the Southern population of 9 million with 5.5 million free and 3.5 million slaves.

Roughly equal armies but the North had an almost 4-1 military population to draw from. And oh by the way, over 2/3 of free Southern population did NOT own slaves.

Why would anyone down vote historic facts?

I gave little known facts about civil war. All easily verifiable!

Did I rub someone's bias the wrong way?

There used to be statue of Gen. Lee on a traffic circle that still bares his name.

the confedrate officers were allowed to keep their sidearms and their horses after the war. Enlisted men had to walk home, with no gun with which to fend for their families.
