Last week, one bored coder took to Reddit to show off an dreadfully designed volume control implementation, ironically urging fellow members to one-up his effort and “make the best volume slider.” “Best” meaning “the worst” in this case, of course.

It's not funny when an otherwise excellent device (Nvidia Shield TV) is burdened by a terrible volume control.

Amen. At one time some piece of Apple software (may have been the Quicktime player) had a volume control that was a knob. On the surface this seems like a good idea. Everybody knows how a knob works. But to change the volume you had to put the cursor over the knob, then move it in a circle either CW or CCW depending which way you want the volume to go. Turns out mice are much easier to operate in a straight line than a circle. So while the control was intuitively easy, it was difficult in practice.

I bet the guy who wrote the code for that volume control thinks his job could never be replaced with AI.

There was a bunch of audio/video players that had knobs as controls in the late 90s, early 2000s. Terrible UI.

If it's the one that I'm thinking of, it had numbers along the outside of the knob and you could just click the number to select the volume...

I thought the wheel of volume was funny.

I don't remember there being any numbers but you may be right.

Curling and Wheel of Volume are the best.
