it isn't the roar for me, but rather, it's the buzzing between pitches that i could notice through the tv on a night like Saturday night in the first few innings... or between plays in the Alabama football game for example

I agree, that's part of it.

I took a born-and-bred Chicago girl to the WVU football game in 2010. That wasn't even a particularly loud game for the most part, but she commented how the noise was "sustained".

This chick has been going to Soldier Field most of her life and she recognized it wasn't the same.
