See, this is where I think you're wrong. Saivion Smith wouldn't have to wait until his senior year to play. He would have provided valuable depth and played a ton in the Nickel. Playing time isn't the complaint because he would have played.

There's no offense intended, but Savion did not excel in the Nickel and if you watched him do it you'd understand that you're actually in the wrong here.

He's an edge corner. He doesn't play well in the slot and many others-along with Savion-evidently don't see that changing. I disagree with the idea that he'd play alot because if you aren't productive where they put you then you will see your PT impacted.

So no, PT is the complaint. Your tack-intentional or not-is to reframe the debate. This is almost assuredly about PT. He doesn't need to play in the slot in college to position himself as a professional. Unfortunately, LSU needs him to play there and/or requires him to do so if he wants to play.

If he doesn't excel there, then he won't play. Thereby invalidating your stance that it isn't a PT issue. It's absolutely a PT issue.

So you're saying the issue is he's better on the edge, but only (maybe) has the opportunity to play nickel this year?

Why/how is that the assumption?
If he's better on the edge he'd be second team behind DJ and KT, and still get plenty of PT.
Be a starter next year most likely.

If he's not better than the current/younger backups at that position then maybe edge is NOT his calling? He competes for significant time at nickel and they re-evaluate next year.

Either way, I think he would've gotten PT this year at one position or the other, and eventually move into whichever he is best at.

Showing scouts the flexibility to play multiple roles in the backfield is not a negative. Obviously you'll be more natural at one, and they'll take that into account.

Besides, more playing time doesn't mean you're going to get drafted higher. If you can't beat out the guys at DBU why would you expect the competition to be less in the NFL regardless of the route you take?

And also.. I wholeheartedly agree with OP.

It took Duke and Debo 3 or 4 games to become two of my favorite Tigers. High hopes that Donnie will be just as successful.
