Texas Hill Country vs. Lookout Mountain Area

Planning the family vacation for the summer and are considering a trip to either the New Braunfels / San Marcos area or to the Lookout Mountain area around Chattanooga.
Would like to hear pros and cons for both areas and recommendations for things to do / places to visit for each
Hill Country would be my choice--Bigger and better(?) cities and food options--but wife appears to prefer the other.

Go further east from Lookout and explore the little towns scattered around North Georgia and West NC. Dahloenga, Cashiers, Highlands, and such.
Won't get Texas BBQ, but you will find great food if you look hard enough. Texas Hill Country is meh. The little towns are more interesting to me in the Blue Ridge, but if you want a city environment, Austin would be better than Atlanta.

My vote goes towards hill country. Do the area of towns such as Fredricksburg, Comfort, Johnson City, Bandera etc and have a good time. When in
Fredricksburg stay in one of the B&B's definitely.

I bring my 3 kids to San Antonio every summer and they absolutely love it.
We float the San Marcos river one day,use Texas state tubes, we float the Guadeloupe one day, kids enjoy the chute part of the river.
Schlitterbahn
Six flags
Sea world
This summer we're going to head 90 miles west one day and try the Frio river float.
My kids enjoy the rivers more than the parks. Not to mention floating the river only cost $10 a person for all day!

I think the Hill Country is overrated from an outdoors/topography perspective. Highlands and Cashiers trump any specific part of the Hill Country, IMO.
That said, I think the Hill Country has more variety. If I wanted to do a weekend somewhere, or I wanted to do a week in a single spot, I'd choose WNC.
If I wanted to tool around with the family and see a handful of areas, I'd do Hill Country.

Hill country gets my vote with Bandera Dude ranch up there, does get very hot in Texas
Lookout Mtn area is not bad, we did Rock City and Chattanooga area and nice bed and breakfast options. White water rafting a little further but doable.

I love both but think Hill Country just based on more options in a one hour radius
Love that are to float the rivers and go out to Canyon Lake, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Austin
If you have kids, a few things they will like:
Aquarena Springs- San Marcos
San Marcos River
Comal River
Wonder World- San Marcos
Enchanted Rock- Fredericksburg
Hamilton Pool- Austin area(west)
Natural Bridge Caverns- Outside of San Antonio
Snake Farm- Outside of New Braunfels

A good friend of mine has several B&B's in Fredericksburg TX if anyone is interested:
Fredericksburg Tx B&B's
I've been to this one and its awesome. Close to main street and has a hot tub out back.
Crenwelge's Creekside Cottage
