Christians could learn tolerance by reading the New Testament and actually following Jesus' message

Matthew 10:34
quote:

Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

Matthew 24:6-7
quote:

And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

Romans 13:4
quote:

For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

Jesus also cited the Old Testament, so it's fair game as well.

Numbers 10:9
quote:

And when you go to war in your land against the adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, that you may be remembered before the Lord your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies.

Context is important with all those verses. He wasn't commanding anyone to take up the sword. He was predicting the 2nd coming, where there will be a great tribulation against the people of God and Christ will return and bear the sword, Himself, and defeat His enemies.

The Romans 13:4 passage is laughable in this context. Paul was talking about submitting to the ruling authorities who "bear the sword" (of justice) against the wrongdoer. He was saying that Christians should obey the government and he was saying it to Christians being persecuted by a wicked Roman emperor.

ETA: Christ was also talking about bringing division and enmity, even within households where a father believes and a son doesn't, or a mother believes and a daughter doesn't. He wasn't talking about taking up the sword to kill unbelievers but talking figuratively about strife that would exist because He came to show people the truth.
