Start talking about Islamists and Islamism. Starting there would at least give us an understanding of what is going on in the ME.

I've long favored the funding of Islamic schools by Western countries to counteract the Saudi funding. The Gulf Arab funding in general is why we are where we are. Something has to be done to counteract that. There are many schools the West could base it on, such as Mu'tazila or the Averroism, with the former now an epithet in jihadi circles.

As long as the Gulf Arabs continue to fund these schools in different countries, even in the West, terrorism will have an intellectual and ideological basis.

This is such an overlooked solution. Everyone wants a MOAB, instant kill, method of defeating the likes of ISIS. The problem is, it will take generations to defeat the extremist interpretations of the Quran that ISIS uses. You can't *kill* ideologies. You have to shift it over time. It took quite a long time before the Puritans stopped believing in witchcraft. It will take a long time to eliminate the extremist nature of Muslim faith.

Now, I'm not saying we need to sit back and not do anything in the meanwhile. I think Trump's pushing this week to get more of the Muslim countries to fight them is a giant leap forward. But you can drop all the bombs in the world... without educating and reconditioning the young population on a better and more compelling interpretation than what ISIS is pushing, there will always be the potential of terrorism.

I can tell you, I have had this exact conversation with several Muslims while drinking bourbon in a bar in Abu Dhabi -- their take on it is, they want more American cars and women in their cities and fewer bombs and violence.

Another way to look at is this -- how long has racism lasted in this country? How many blacks were strung up in the hanging tree just for looking the wrong way when a white woman was in their vicinity? It took a looong time for the US to evolve. And once that wave of evolution began, it picked up steam very rapidly. Racism definitely still exists here, but it is now an exception and not the norm. Believe it or not, the extremist/radical muslims are a minority to the more modern passive-minded muslims. Their evolutionary wave has begun - we just need to facilitate it. Bombs alone will not achieve those goals.

TL;DR -- bring the downvotes.

Exactly. It took generations for this ideology to take root and grow. It took Muslim Brotherhood types running for Nasser's Egypt and becoming educators in the KSA to spread it to the youth. Funding of Jihadi Salafist mosques that continued the spread. This didn't just happen and isn't going to go away quickly.

Cars and titties vs bombs, death, destruction, and freedom limiting laws in the name of religion. Yeah, that's not a difficult choice.

I'm with you. Such a long term solution isn't going to be an easy sell when the random violence is unpredictable and scary. This is the only solution that has a chance to work though, imho.
