What should I look for? Guy at work has a 2001 crew 4wd with 200k and wants in the neighborhood of $5500. It was his dads then he passed and this guy drove it to work daily. Round trip 40-45 miles. Pretty much it. Not sure about injectors. What are the big ticket items to look for. I've never owned a diesel. Was looking at some 6.0s when someone overheard me talking and gave me this guys name. I do k ow him and know that he is meticulous by nature. Getting pictures later tonight
Thanks
Thanks

If you won't buy it, I will.

If the truck is in good condition that's a steal.

Waiting on his response. I got his number from another fella. Thanks.

Would not buy...
price is good...
but figure spending $2300 every 2-3 years (if lucky) on factory bosch injectors...
there are newer(but high perf)style nozzles available for an additional $900 that seem to have been lasting longer...but you will have to have custom tuning to run them.

Well it was sold. Just hung up with him. Reading a bit and seems people have been installing these FASS systems with a fuel pump to help out the injectors. Anyone install that setup?
Not sure if I want to look for a diesel or just go with the 6.0. I've never owned a diesel.
Thanks

My truck(now my sons since I bought the 2011) had an airdog 165...pretty much the same as the FASS still wore out injectors...the newer SAC nozzles have helped many...I've got a set on order for his truck from Lincoln diesel

If you don't need one, don't buy one unless you've got money to burn.

If you dont need a diesel. Dont buy one. Wish i had bought a gas 3/4 ton the first time

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I'll head to a gaser. All this diesel reading has me spooked. I'd like to pull a camper every now and then. I just don't want to throw money on a diesel if I don't need it.
Unless it was an insanely good deal.
What years were the lb7im to stay away from? I've heard the lbz's are where its at
Edit: anyone ever buy a rebuilt title? I've found several solid deals. I'm not sure you can get insurance on them from but a select few. I'd have to call about that

01-04... injectors only issue
04.5 & 05 was the lly some overheat issues in extremely hot climates cheap mods(lbz intake horn) fix that...
06 & 07 WAS the Lbz solid motor glow plugs seem to be the only issues
07.5 To 2010 LMM...basically a Lbz with DPF on it...DPF deletes gives substantial mpg increase...
2011 up adds DEF better towing vehicle through frame improvements etc..NOX sensors are a common failure point($225)

general consensus of the OB is if you don't need one, don't get one.
pops just bought one and I can say even though I don't need one, that I will be getting one for my next truck or just as a toy. waiting for my FIL to sell his 2008 duramax so I can get it

Duramax are prone to crack head at water jacket around injector on passenger side.

Diesels are fricking awesome. The problem is they're nearly impossible to justify financially. The split in initial cost between diesel and gas is just too damn high.

Let's see.
Gas burner fuel pump.
$250
Diesel high pressure fuel pump.
$1300

pow pow rolls coal regularly pretty funny to see a 70 year old man running a tune on his truck
don't care about the financial difference, it'll just be used to tow the boats and camper. plus most of my family members are mechanics and work for beer.

Damn. Great fricking summary. That gives me a lot of help.
Appreciate all the info. Anyone buy anything with a rebuilt title? Not just diesels, but anything in general truck wise
