Try 7 years, it came out in 2011. And it took him 4 years to get that book out after The name of the wind came out in 2007.
At least GRRM put out 3 books in a 4 year period with ASOIAF before going off the rails, Rothfuss was a slackass from the start.
To me the worst thing about Rothfuss's current series is this initial trilogy won't really solve anything with the series long term (i.e. the Chandrian) since it's basically just a round about prequel series.
Combine that with Wise Man's Fear being a gigantic bloated mess and I really barely care about the series.

I loved wise mans fear but it definitely could have used some editing. I really didn't need over a hundred pages with Felurian. That was boring as frick
