My HOA dues are $260 a year, and they're used for upkeep of the common areas, the ponds, playground, and our community pool (which is kept immaculate). Our dues are anything but stupid.

There are 46 homes in my neighborhood and 15 of us are not a part of the HOA due to having a different home builder that did not require us to sign a HOA contract when our homes were constructed. They tried to trick some of us into voluntarily joining by sending us contracts in the mail. But word got out quickly that we did not have to belong to the HOA unless we choose to be. Hell no. All of our next door neighbors belong to the HOA but not us.
