Worldview seemed simpler, though it wasn't, two superpowers at odds, declare your camp and let the chips fall
don't remember Cuban missile crisis
spies were spies and we assumed there were spies
remember the spy plane shoot down
both sides armed to the max and prevented anything from going too stupid

I never watch the Olympics anymore but I was riveted during the Cold War to watch the USA v. USSR. One thing I learned later was that their basketball team was not made up of Russians. They were mostly Lithuanians because they're taller. After the USSR broke up their basketball went to hell because Lithuania was a separate state.
In 1990 I met a guy named Stepanzi. I asked the origins of his name. He said "Lithuanian Jew". He was about 6-7.
