Legit chronic pain people

All of the talk of over prescribing made me wonder with all of the focus on the opioid epidemic, what do legitimate chronic pain sufferers do to deal with their conditions?
I mean people with true 24/7, debilitating, and life altering chronic pain. I can imagine they immediately get thrown into the category with all of the other drug seekers, abusers, etc despite having medical proof that warrants aggressive treatment.
I just feel bad knowing that the pain pill seeking stigma has to be adversely impacting people who truly need this sort of treatment to deal with some really awful conditions.

There is no real evidence showing that opiates improve their function and are associated with a lot of potential harms.
There are a number of other therapies. Pain is a symptom, the cause should be treated. Opiates should be reserved for cancer and acute pain (sparingly).
That said, I continue to prescribe and wean a lot of people's pain meds, but the goal is not to continue a therapy that has harms and no benefit.

A lot of junkies get started because of chronic pain. it's not really a clean distinction.
i got started because of a back injury that will leave me w/ nerve pain for the rest of my life.

My dad has severe pain from spinal arthritis and degenerative disc disease. They gave him a prescription for hydrocodone, which he has never filled, and Tramadol, which he used once in a while but has stopped entirely. He gets by most days on aspirin and an anti inflammatories.

Just ignore it. Works most of the time.

Do I what I do. Ibuprofen and man up.

So what medicine and/or therapy would you prescribe for a very complex connective tissue disorder, where corrective surgery has actually caused permanent and unfixable damage and serious chronic pain? In this person's case the only PT that has been advised is aquatic walking as anything more will further damage major joints.

It can suck
But I never needed prescriptions
If it got too bad I always found some extra mobility work to do for my hips and work on muscle imbalances in lower back and such

But your body eventually won't cooperate if the trauma is bad enough & pain signals will be sent electrically thru your neural pathways interfering with cognitive abilities no matter how tough you are.
If the US would switch back to cannabis for arthritic conditions, fibromyalgia, etc w/ SMALL doses of opiates for occassional breakthrough pain, the "epidemic" would be reduced drastically b/c there would be no physical dependency

Which strain of cannabis? What dose

A severe case of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Even this guy indicated the damage that's been done is beyond the scope of what he is able to treat.

Indica.
Dose varies depending on tolerance,
Would adjust depending on body chemistry similar to the way they adjust opiate types-
Trial/error, & there would be no risk of O.D

There are things worse than death.
So many things caused this. As an ER nurse I fricking LOVE telling drug seekers to frick off "we don't have Dilaudid". But I also hand over a lot of Motrin scrips for people I feel could use a few norco. Fractures, shingles, burns, OBVIOUS dental abscesses, kidney stones? These folks used to get norco. Now lucky to get a Tramadol.
Chronic pain is a whole different animal. Hardcore to just cut these people off. Yes there is an opiate epidemic, but there are people out there with legit pain, and opium has been used for a century or three. Side effects? Can't shite, get addicted, and if abused you may kill yourself with an OD. But by and large the med does it job of stopping pain.
You can see both sides.

I started having arthritis in college. Literally have hurt my entire adult life. Diet has helped as much as meds have. Still sucks, and I know I will probably be disabled about the time I retire.

It's not that damn hard to ween yourself off painkillers over time. Some people just don't have self control.
They aren't for chronic pain and the doctors need to quit prescribing them for such.
One of these days our government will wake up and do what's right for the people. We need more research on cannibis for medicinal purposes.
