Opinions on Washington DC

Just finishing up a trip here, first time here in over 20 years.
Fantastic city, easily walkable, I'd probably rank it #2 (tied with Boston) as must see American cities, with NYC being #1.
Only thing I found odd was the service at almost every establishment to be very poor; even at the nicer sit down restaurants. Is D.C. known for this, or did I have incredibly bad luck over a 4 day period?

I went to DC a year ago and definitely loved it, especially this time of year. Beautiful city, Uber is great all over if you dont want to walk. Airport is easy.
We stayed at a friends appartment so we didnt do hotels but we had good service at restaurants so IDK if your experience was just a hiccup. Really neat bars and the monuments are great.
Overall really enjoy DC and will definitely travel there again.
Only problem was that food/drink was so dang expensive but if you can get over that it's great.

Definitely agree uber is great, it's no more than $7 to/from any notable destination in the city. I didn't find the food to be that expensive, at least compared to other major cities. We had a great meal at old ebbit's which I found to be very reasonably priced. Tons of great happy hours throughout the city.

Every single place I attended, with the exception of clydes in Georgetown and mastros steakhouse.
Many of the hostesses at restaurants were aloof. Waitress at old ebbits was awful. Baristas at milkbar provided the second worst service I've ever experienced. Worst would be the lady at the retail store next to our hotel.
I'm not picky, so the service must have been really bad for me to notice. The good thing is it didn't ruin my trip.

Old Ebbitt is the #1 tourist trap restaurant in D.C. Poor service is to be expected.
I'm not familiar with Milkbar but it sounds like a trendy place that won't be around in three years.
Glad Clydes was good at least. Same ownership group as Old Ebbitt. Maestros is a great steakhouse but lots of great local options too if you return.

Ironically, I also went to del friscos (another chain steakhouse) and while the waiter there was fantastic, the first floor hostess wasn't welcoming at all.
My experience in D.C. was the complete opposite of New Orleans; I've never experienced such friendly service in my life.
Oh well, I'd love to go back, I didn't get to spend any time in Virginia, and I'd love to catch a sporting event. Fwiw, the food at all the restaurants was excellent.

Milk Bar is a Momofuku bakery that started in NYC 9 years ago and now has 10 locations. They've won countless awards and been plastered all over TV shows for years.This post was edited on 4/27/17 at 2:00 pm

It's a dinosaur that only fellow tourists who don't venture far from the tourist places would recommend.

I love visiting D.C. Add Annapolis and Northern Virginia if you are there for a while.

I went for the raw bar happy hour, but also really enjoyed the Caesar salad (and it was only $8 for a generous portion) and their cheese plate.
As i didn't get an entree, I can't speak on the rest of the menu. But for a late afternoon snack after sightseeing, I was very satisfied.
