Anyone own an early 2000s Lexus IS 300?

My son saved up his pennies and is trying to buy one and I'm not sure how I feel about it. He's 19, btw and has his eye on a manual which is harder to find.

Just curious; I know the newer Lexus models are much more expensive to find parts for but older ones still shared some parts with normal Toyotas.

Thoughts?

I dont own one but I mean how old and how many miles is the std question. even though they share parts it still maybe more expensive to work on.

what does he drive now?

make sure the model is new enough to have a timing chain instead of a timing belt.

Lexus makes great cars. I wouldn't worry about it.

Much more reliable than any other manufacturer other than Toyota.

Timing belt replacement is a costly charge at around 90,000 miles on early 2000 Lexus vehicles. Make sure the one you are buying has already had this service performed or factor that maintenance into the price you pay.

i would not buy a model early enough to even have a timing belt.

Toyota began putting chains 4 cylinders in 2002 and the v-6's in 2007

this particular model (2002-2005 i think) uses a particular type of engine that he's ga-ga over so i don't think he's going to care about timing chain vs timing belt and just assume he's going to need to change it every 100k miles.

I used to have an 01' Yellow IS300 a few years ago, then I got into an accident with an old lady and she totaled the front end. It was a great car and I was sad to see it go.

I now have a 13' IS250 and love it just as much. Can't go wrong with Lexus, as it is a Toyota after all.

Same straight six they used in the Supras and GS300's for years. Never had any major issues with it.

Make sure as a previous poster said, that the timing belt has been changed and keep an eye underneath the car towards the transmission that there is not an oil leak.

Those cars are notorious for having a rear main seal oil leak, as that is a costly repair as well.

Timing belt is due every 90k miles. Very reliable car. Engine parts will be shared with GS300. I have a 99 GS300 with 230k miles and it runs fine. I also have an 02 GS300 with 180k that wasn't maintained as well and it runs fine after I gave it a tuneup. Maintenance is not bad especially if you get parts off of rockauto and do it yourself. It also shares engine design with mk4 na supras but the is/gs use a coil on plug system instead of a distributor. If he wants it get it for him.

I liked those too as a child, but then I found out about E46 BMWs with a better motor and a better transmission.
