Me and a couple of buddies are planning a camping/fishing trip to Lake Guntersville in mid May. We are looking at camping on public/TVA land or islands to get a more primitive camping experience. Looking for anyone that has experience with this to offer advice or tips. This will be our first time to Guntersville.

There's "primitive" camping at the state park, and the Town Creek campgrounds, but it's really not all that primitive. I really can't think of any that are. And as far as islands, I don't know of any where camping would be allowed. Are you looking at any particular areas of the lake?

Don't do anything stupid, here are the rules for use of undeveloped TVA land, basically don't cut anything or damage the area. Buy local firewood or use downed wood, do not cut trees down for your wood.

It is allowed. Everything in purple on this map shows TVA undeveloped public land. Several of the islands on the lake are included. We will probably ride around the lake until we find an area with no other people.

Hmmm, I guess maybe it is. I've lived in this area my whole life and it never really occurred to me. I have camped on the island that is northwest of the state park. Nobody arrested me, but I wasn't sure they wouldn't. If you're looking for more rustic, maybe try some of those areas up toward Langston.

34.461454, -86.216587, put in at Water Front, hit river channel and head down river about a mile or two. No one will bother yall and good fishing all around the island. Great fishing straight across the river from there as well.

Tons of bass and tons of big catfish near the channels is about all I can contribute. Sounds fun.

One of the islands at alreds was on fire Sunday. I assumed it was campers that didn't get their fire out. I see people camping in the islands all the time, but I have no idea if it's legal. When it gets closer to time to come here bump this thread and I'll tell you what the fish are doing.

That's great! Thanks. I'll definitely take any tips I can get since I've never fished the lake before. I just googled and found this. I assume this TVA controlled burn was the fire you saw.

Just be advised....some of the islands have been killed by the droppings from birds (burned like too much fertilizer). Stay away from those islands. Man they stink.

This is true. Some of those islands you see southwest of the airport will fall into this category. Cormorants roost on them.

Anyway, glad this thread was started. But, I'm a little embarrassed I had to learn from a Louisianan that it's legal to camp in my back yard.

Yeah I kinda figured all TVA land that was open to hunting was also open to camping. For me, it was great because we found a slough that was accessible from a buddy's friend's land and we were able to duck hunt from there one year.

To be fair I've lived in Tuscaloosa since 2002. I grew up around Baton Rouge and never could convert.

Grew up in Sulphur. Been here since 2002 myself...I'd never convert. My late daddy would rise from the grave and kick my arse if I ever converted to a Alabama team.

Don't be one of those jackholes that sinks their boat screwing around in front of the dam.

Wish I could help you more, but I don't fish lakes much, like fly fishing rivers. We do have a former pro at Pickwick, but I am not going to be up that way to ask him advice before you come up here.
