And to the poster who mentioned Whiter Shade of Pale.
I believe it is from the funeral scene in "The Big Chill." Terrific movie.

Sisters friend that passed away was a huge Beatles fan and they played In My Life. Not a dry eye in the place.

my uncle sang it at my PawPaw's funeral...not a dry eye in the whole church..subbed in the word "daddy" as he led into the chorus...

My Dad was an operatically trained baritone. One of the songs he was know for singing was "Ol' Man River" from the musical "Showboat". Not something you'd think about as a funeral song, but at his memorial my 18 y/o son played it as a tribute to my father. Lots of waterworks after this that night.
Check it out (and I'm STILL trying to figure out who put the beer on my piano! )
And pay special attention to my little LSU corner in the background--that's a framed, team-autographed 1986 Final Four jersey... )

Funeral songs are kind of new to me... with a slideshow.
But bagpipes are always the answer.

My wife passed away 2 years ago yesterday.
I played Garth Brooks The Dance.
Her sister played Josh Groban You Raise me Up.
I have been floored when they pop up on the radio. I guess those songs are ruined.

Goin Up Yonder
Played this with my bandmates and a friend of ours female vocalist (like old school gospel singer) at my brother's funeral 3 weeks ago. I can't explain the emotions of that moment. Been listening to it every damn day. SMH

My mother had an older brother who was severely crippled at birth. Barely developed and mostly skeletal, he died at 13 years of age while being held in his mother's arms in a rocking chair.
My mom was playing around on the floor as a child, and she heard something that sounded like a deep gasp. She looked up at her mother in the rocking chair, who had tears streaming down her face, and she knew that her brother was gone. The song playing on the radio at that moment was Ave Maria.
I burst into tears when she told me that. I've never heard the song the same since.
