Depends on the yard. When I lived in a shotgun house in town with a tiny yard a push-reel mower, and weed-eater was all I needed.
Battery would be fine if you could do the whole yard without recharging.
It's decent sized, but nothing large. A few trees to mow around, and an old swing set and clothesline (I rent, otherwise I'd tear them down).
The gas mower I have now isn't self-propelled, and it takes about an hour or so to mow. No idea how long it would take with a self-propelled model.
Going to another post, the ability to switch to a weed eater is a big plus imho. The one the landlord got me requires 5 steps it seems to get started. Quite annoying.

I'm not sure that there are mowers and weed eaters that use the same batteries. You wouldn't want to carry around a mower battery on a weed eater and you couldn't cut grass with a battery you would be comfortable carrying on a weed eater.
Dewalt makes some weed eaters and blowers that use the same batteries as their cordless tools, but I don't know about mowers.

If it takes an hour to cut with a gas mower, I'd assume a battery powered mower would struggle with your yard.. I'm just curious, why is keeping gas on hand a problem?
Also, like I said, I have zero experience with electric mowers, but it seems nearly impossible to fix them when they break.

If it already takes an hour, I'd stick with gas.
CS Monitor Here's an article mostly about yard size and gas vs electric mowers; but the most important word in the article is "her".
