Hey Guys,
My Dad's New Holland mower recently broke down after a long life. We've been fixing it for a while, but the most recent bill to repair it is too much. With that being said, it's time for a new Mower.
He wants to stay in the $1,500-$2,000 range. I obviously know Cub Cadet, John Deer, Husqvarna, Poulan and Hustler, but what are your experiences with them?
Zero Turn would be great, but their price tags are usually too high. Thanks in advance for your input and knowledge.

If you have a flat property I would go zero turn.
I have some hills in the background so i went with the John Deere X500 with the 54" deck.
Picked one up that was two years old with service records and have had zero problems whatsoever.
Just avoid the Lowes level line and you will be fine.

I sell and service Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, and at one store had JD due to the local JD dealer did not want to service THD and Lowes. The dealer finally decided to service them again, so I dropped the line to give it to them. I got my hands full as it is.
In the price range you want Cub Cadet or husqvarna. Those riders have done a good job of improving their decks. JD units have been stagnant. Cub Cadet stayed with hydros while husqvarna and JD on the 42" went to a cheap general CVT transmission.
I like the XT1 series by Cub Cadet alittle better than the husqvarna. Cub has done a great job improving the deck belts being thrown on this series. Really don't have to complaints and rarely see one back for mfg issue. Husqvarna always tapered their pulley so belts issue never that bad. I would go with either one
If you buy the cub cadet and replace you blades to with the extreme blades. Very aggressive cut, last longer, and not that much more for a set.
I do not know about husqvarna dealer deals in Louisiana.
I saw in an ad Cub Cadet through Tractor Supply had a nice rebate on their riders starting this Wed. Dealers only have $100 mail in rebate. I sell both because dealer financing options are better and they accept lower credit scores than big boxes.
Idiots that says bad boy whatever. First, not many dealers want to deal with service on them. Company is not easy to deal with. I see them come in all the time especially lately for throwing belts on the 60". I traded 6 less than 2 months old units last month and put customers in cub cadet z force LX or equivalent Gravely line. Good lines for the money. Again, you are in the $5,000 ballpark on up your zero turn should not throw belts. The bad boy fans don't tell you that.

You can get the 42" troybilt zero turn for around 2k with the Lowe's 10% coupon.
I have no knowledge of thier quality, just saying there IS a zero turn out there in the price range.
I had a husqvarna 54" with a 22to b&s engine. That thing was a tank. Motor was incredibly strong. Its a 2002 and my nephew uses it every week.

My Dad was leaning towards a Husqvarna because my Uncle has one, but I've heard Briggs & Stratton motors aren't what they used to be.
I looked at this Zero Turn Husqvarna for only $2,800.

Are there any brands to completely stay away from?

Upper end bad boy.
Pig with lipstick and I see way too many come in the shop for repairs. I seen a lot of them come into the shop right after purchase for belts flying off. Their over priced for what others offer in the same price range.
Low end Husqvarna zero turns the frames come undone or crack. Briggs on them is meh.
Craftsman line or snapper rider lines.
Reason is they either ask MTD or Husqvarna to build them. They charge $300 to $400 more for the same mower you can get under Poulon (husqvarna name) or MTD name.
Exmark residential series is not that good of a line. Professional series is great while residential junk.
In your price range your are better off with a good rider from Husqvarna or Cub Cadet.
You might be able to squeeze in a Troy-Bilt 42" zero turn which is a bang for your buck.
Now these are not $5,000 zero turns and over time the deck pulleys will need to be replaced. $300 to $350 with labor we can redo them or probably around $200 you can. This happens around 400 to 500 hours.
Again, when you spend $4,000 to $5,000 and got to change deck spindles and pulleys on a badboy which cost a lot more money which one is the better bargain? Hey, you got a bad boy skippy right out of high school sold you because he knows a lot. Why, don't he work on them since he is knowledgeable? I seen way too many come in with serious pulley issues after the sale. Then the repairs don't last which by the time that happens bye bye warranty.
Exmark residential the same thing been seeing a lot of them come back for pulley issues. One residential line had plastic idle pulley that cost $80 just for the part. You don't think we and other dealers has pissed off customers.

You can get a Gravely ZT 42 for $2700-2800. Mine has the 24HP Kohler. I am really happy with mine. Easy to service myself and sharpening blades is pretty easy.

The EFI been out about 3 yrs.
I sell a few at one location in the Midwest.
Biggest selling point is in cold weather it is easier to start as people use snow blower attachments with their riders.
Walbro makes the injection system.
Dealer units offer single or twin cylinder.
Big boxes only the single cylinder.
It has been in snow blowers for years just with a carb.
Now again the engines have some history as carb units on snow blowers. The engines so far have been great with the injection. Now when you get into year 4,5, and 6 will I see computer or injection issues. Just do not know at this point.
As for a servicing dealer you have to buy a cable and CD from your parts distributor to hook up to the computer. Less than $200. Out of all the ones my stores have sold I personally hooked all of them up for PDI's and have not seen any issues.

It is a good residential again residential unit.
Price is a few hundred bucks over Cub and husqvarna. In this class and price they are all pretty close in quality. Some people like cub due to cut or longer deck, some like husqvarna for Briggs engine, and some like gravely. At this price point the transmissions which is your most costly part comes from the same mfg.
Again, these are all good residential units, simple to work on, and not made to cut 3 to 4 acres of field grass.
