Those cigs make them look pretty cool.

But, seriously, thanks for posting. That sounds pretty damn good.

Them - Mystic Eyes

First heard Mystic Eyes on the Sopranos when Tony is having a flashback about his dad and instantly loved the song.

(research) First Recording (thanks wikii) Boo Zooh

Group: Georgie and the Monarchs - he's on sax and lost in backing vocals.

and from: Van Morrison with The Monarchs / Them Chronology 1947/8-1969 (no video)

quote:

THE REGENTS SHOWBAND (Harry Baird [Hinton: sic?, Bird] [?], Van Morrison [sax, vox], ...) ?? ?? Radalstown ?? (B[a]ird/Hinton: "a young farmers' dance, a 5 hour marathon during which Van relieved the 2 main singers with an impromptu version of Elvis' 'Blue Suede Shoes'. As he started singing the audience stood mesmerized. "I edged forward to look--his face had gone purple! His eyes were stuck out like organ stops. He was freaking out, going crazy, and the crowd watched in amazement, wondering if he was going to have a stroke. We couldn't let him sing anymore--he was scaring the people."")

What other Van albums, if any, sound like Astral Weeks? That dreamy, swirly sound is mesmerizing. I don't know how else to describe it, but it's wonderful.

There is no other album quite like Astral Weeks.

You can check out some of the stuff I listed in my first post, especially Love's Forever Changes, and also the later Imperial Bedroom by Elvis Costello. Those aren't exactly the same thing, but they are sort of similar.

You can also search in the short-lived genre of baroque pop-psych. You'll never find anything quite like AW, but you might hear something you like.
